Ten Faithful Years by Raymond Daly
Ten Faithful Years by Raymond Daly

A fascinating book brilliantly researched and put together. It’s a fitting tribute to so many unsung heroes of Ireland during a time of huge upheaval in the country. I loved the local stories in particular.

The wonderful selection of songs and ballads throughout the book is a masterclass touch. They evoke many fond memories of sing songs and sessions.

This book is a must for any Irish history buffs out there.

For the last two days I’ve been browsing through this book and I have been more than impressed with what I would call a giant of an achievement for Raymond Daly and the people of Offaly..

History is a tricky subject and as the old saying goes it belongs mostly to the victor but so far the author has avoided that.

I have seen some names and photos that I had forgotten many moon’s ago and found it a joy to recognise them again.

The songs in the story that I have butchered with more than a few pints under my belt made me smile it was a nice touch and a lot of readers will like it.

Well done Raymond its was a great achievement and you and your family can be very proud.

This book is so in depth and coincise in it’s entirety. It is a vast history of a local area and is worth every minute spent reading on it. A brilliant book which will be especially liked by local history enthusiasts. Well done to Ray, no doubt this will not be the last we hear of this author.

Raymond Daly’s excellent publication after years of painstaking research and devotion highlights the emergence of Irish Nationalism across Offaly and Ireland from the late nineteenth century into the early years on the twentieth century when its gathering momentum from the drive for independence from British rule and the revival in the Gaelic culture through sports, literature, and song would replace the desire for Home Rule for Ireland.

The inclusion of the most popular Irish songs and ballads throughout the book is a clever move. Offaly was a dependable county for Irish Nationalism and in the aftermath of Easter 1916, Raymond articulates the constant attacks on RIC barracks during the War of Independence – indeed, my grandfather, Corporal Martin Hoctor, was prominent in the attack on the RIC barracks in Geashill in June 1920 –

In order to really gain an insight into what it was like to be living in Offaly and throughout Ireland during these ten years and participate in the struggle for Irish freedom, purchase this fascinating book as I guarantee that one will have great difficulty in putting it down. Raymond dedication to complete this book has manifested itself into this publication that emanates his passion for local and national history. I cannot recommend this book highly enough and I could go on for hundreds of more words but obtain the book and be prepared to be amazed.
